Protection & Management
The nominated property is safeguarded through legal protection, institutional coordination, and long-term stewardship planning designed to protect both cultural and natural values.
The legal protection of the Ustyurt: Landscapes and Aran Hunting Traps mixed heritage site is based on the Republic of Kazakhstan's legislation on natural and cultural heritage. The territory is designated as a strict nature reserve and is protected under the Law on Protected Areas. The cultural landscape of the nominated property is designated as a cultural heritage site of republican significance and is protected under the Law on Protection and Use of Cultural Heritage Sites.
The responsibility for implementing the protective measures guaranteeing the preservation of the nominated property is shared between the Ministry of Culture and Information for cultural heritage and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources for natural heritage, which signed a special Agreement on joint management, protection, conservation, and monitoring of the Ustyurt: Landscapes and Aran Hunting Traps. The Agreement established the Interministerial Steering Committee, which provides overall strategic guidance, decision-making, and coordination of government agency activities related to the nominated property, and the Working Group, which supports the implementation of the Committee's decisions.
The site management is represented by the Ustyurt State Nature Reserve Republican State Institution under the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources. It is responsible for the overall protection and management, including visitation management, of the nominated property. It also conducts regular monitoring of the nominated property's state of conservation.
